From Past to Present
One of the most iconic images of American transportation is the train. Starting in the mid 1800s, the building of rail lines helped to bridge the young nation together. Rail ushered in an era of mobility—the movement of people and goods.
Today, rail remains a critical component of our nation’s transportation system. Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) Rail Research, a part of the Freight and Investment Analysis Division, is dedicated to exploring the future of freight and passenger rail. Other activities include the interaction of rail with other transportation modes such as intermodal trucking or ships and with traffic at highway-rail crossings.
From the futuristic freight shuttle to planning and determining the feasibility of high-speed rail, the TTI Rail Research staff explores every aspect of rail.
Also housed at TTI is the Association of American Railroads Affiliated Laboratory for Railway Research (ALRR). The AAR Affiliated Laboratory studies, develops, and applies new and emerging technologies to solve rail industry problems.
